What He's Like:
The American Hairless Terrier is an alert, loving, energetic, happy, playful, loyal, and cuddly dog. He loves to warm himself in your lap, or snuggle with you under the blankets. He is very affectionate and dependent on his family, and can only be a house pet. Yet he's also an active, spirited and protective dog who can be fearless in his devotion to you. He makes a good watchdog with his keen nose for intruders and his readiness to protect his territory and family. He can bark too much and be yappy at times, and needs to be a reassured that a visitor is not a threat. He would much rather approach strangers slowly and grow used to them rather than being grabbed and picked up by them. He can learn to be friendly to visitors if he is given chances to become accustomed to them while he's still a puppy. He is a trainable dog who is eager to please you, but he can also be stubborn and independent at times. A bundle of energy, he is active indoors but needs daily outdoor exercise, and enjoys long walks, hikes or jogs. He likes challenging games that allow him to use his mind, and loves to chase balls and to jump. If you don't give him enough to do, he may bark and dig. He loves to dig! When outdoors he should always be on a leash or in a safely enclosed area, as he will chase small animals and birds. He is good with dogs and cats as long as they are family pets and he is raised with them from puppyhood, but he isn't trustworthy with smaller pets and birds, and with dogs he doesn't know. He is good with responsible and experienced children who are old enough not to be rough with him, and makes a wonderful playmate for them. He knows how to adjust his energy, and can be very gentle and loving. He is generally a very healthy dog, but you must protect him with a warm sweater during winter and from sunburn and heat during hotter months. He sweats when he is hot or scared. He is not a good swimmer, and must be carefully monitored around water. He does not shed, and so makes a wonderful pet if you like your home neat and tidy.
The American Hairless Terrier is 7 to 16 inches tall (to shoulders) and weighs 5 to 16 pounds. As his name suggests he has no coat. His skin can be marked with any color.
No brushing required.
The American Hairless Terrier is a very new breed of dog. He is descended from Rat Terriers, and in particular from one dog who in 1972 gave birth to a hairless puppy. The Scott family of Louisiana developed the breed from this litter, and he continues to be developed by breeders as a wonderful family pet. The American Hairless Terrier has been recognized by the United Kennel Club of England. He is not yet recognized by the AKC.
