Description

The Chinese Crested dog is a unique looking animal, and comes in two varieties, which is the hairless variety and the powderpuff variety. The hairless crested dog has no hair at all on its body, and just a crest of fur on its head, giving it a very unusual appearance. The powderpuff variety has a long, silky coat. Both varieties of this breed can come in a range of colors, and can be spotted as well as coming in solid colors. This is a small and fragile looking toy dog with a very petite face and features.

Temperament

This dog breed is extremely affectionate and loving, and enjoys plenty of fuss, attention, and the company of humans. These dogs do not bark, but do enjoy playing, climbing, digging, and interacting with children. This is also a very intelligent breed, and many of these dogs are very adept at performing tricks. These dogs make excellent companions, and for those with allergies the hairless variety is particularly suitable.

Height & weight

The Chinese Crested dog should reach a weight of around ten pounds maximum, and the height of this breed is around twelve inches.

Common health / behavioral problems

There are a number of health issues that can affect the hairless Chinese Crested breed. The hairless dogs suffer from allergies to both wool and lanolin, and are also prone to loss of teeth. Their skin can suffer when exposed to the sun for longer periods, and therefore sunscreen is recommended when taking the hairless variety outdoors.

Trainability

The Chinese Crested is a very intelligent breed and enjoys being active, therefore training should not prove to be a big problem. However, these dogs can lose interest quickly, and therefore you need to ensure that you keep their attention in order to enjoy more effective training and better results.

Ideal living conditions

These dogs are indoor dogs, and are well suited to apartment living. They do not like extreme temperatures, hot or cold, and this should be reflected in the environment in which they live.

Exercise requirements

Although this is an indoor breed and will be quite happy getting most of their exercise indoors, these dogs do enjoy being active and will enjoy taking brisk walks with their owners, or enjoying a little playtime outdoors if you have a yard or garden.

Diet & nutrition

The Chinese Crested should receive a high quality and well balanced diet, and you should bear in mind that the hairless variety is prone to dental problems when planning their diet. Small, regular meals are ideal for this breed, and as with all dogs access should be made available to fresh water at all times.

Life expectancy

The life expectancy of a healthy, fit Chinese Crested is around ten to twelve years.

Grooming requirements

The grooming requirements for this breed can vary based upon whether you have the powderpuff or the hairless variety. With the hairless dogs you can keep their skin in good condition with a regular application of a small amount of lotion or oil. The powderpuff variety should be regularly brushed in order to keep his coat in good condition.

Origin

The Chinese Crested is a breed that originates from Africa.
