What He's Like:

The Jack Russell Terrier is a high-energy, confident, loving, loyal, and playful dog. He wants to be fully involved with his family, and needs lots of games, play and attention. He is a friendly, happy, outgoing dog who can be very gentle and kind. He is also strong-willed, and absolutely fearless. He will take on any dog-no matter how big! He can be confrontational toward other dogs and may be aggressive toward them if not controlled. He's generally not good with cats and other small pets because he wants to chase and hunt them. He is a trainable dog and can be quite obedient but you will require a lot of patience to train him. He's strong-minded he must be treated with firmness and discipline, and given clear rules to follow. He makes a good watchdog because he is fiercely protective of his family. He will bark non-stop to let you know a stranger is near. He can be friendly with new people once he gets to know them. He is bursting with energy and loves his toys and games--he's no couch potato! He needs plenty of indoor and outdoor activity. He needs a daily walk, and should always be leashed so he won't chase after animals. He should have a fenced yard to play in, if possible. He should not be left alone to grow bored or lonely, or he will bark, dig, chew or jump to escape. He is kind toward children, although he is better with older children, since he is sensitive to teasing and will snap or growl if treated roughly. He is a light-to-medium shedder, and might not be a good pet if you concerned about finding some dog hair in the house.

The Jack Russell Terrier is 10 to 12 inches tall (to shoulders) and weighs 13 to 17 pounds. He has a medium-length, wiry coat. His coat color can be white, black, tan or a combination of these colors.

He only need to be brushed occasionally because his coat basically maintains itself. Pet coat: Clipped short every few months. Show coat: Stripped (dead hairs plucked out) every few months.

The Jack Russell Terrier was bred from fox terriers and developed in Southern England to hunt fox both above and below ground. He takes his name from the Reverend John Russell, who would use his terriers to flush animals while he was out riding. The breed was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1989, and was already known in America as early as the 1930's. The Jack Russell was admitted to the AKC in 2003 under the name Parson Russell Terrier. His AKC popularity was 75th out of 157 breeds in 2007.
