Toy Poodle Information
Description
A small and elegant looking toy dog, the toy poodle sports a cute, curly coat, with long, wide, droopy ears framing the head.
This dog gives off a proud and dignified appearance, and walks with grace and elegance. The curly coat has a dense and coarse texture, and these dogs come in any solid color.
Temperament
A sensitive and intelligent creature, the toy poodle is a very alert, loyal, and responsive dog, and has a pleasant and amiable personality. This is a very entertaining and sociable breed, but can be quite demanding at times. Many toy poodles can be quite reserved around people that they do not know. These dogs do bark quite a lot, and if provoked can be quite snappy. Some toy poodles may be quite timid and nervous, but generally the breed tends to be quite happy and cheerful. This breed gets along well with other animals as well as with older children, but may not be suited to be around younger children who may be boisterous and may pester the dog.
Height & weight
In terms of height the toy poodle tends to grow to under ten inches. The weight of the toy poodle usually reaches around four to eight pounds.
Common health / behavioral problems
There are a number of health problems to which this toy dog breed is prone. This includes diabetes, ear infections, runny eyes, luxating patella, and epilepsy.
Trainability
The toy poodle is said to be one of the most trainable breeds around, and is an eager, obedient, and intelligent dog that is both keen and quick to learn. They should be socialized at an early age, and should be trained in bark control to avoid too much noise when the dog grows older.
Ideal living conditions
This breed is very active indoors, and does not necessarily need a yard or garden, and so is suited to apartment living as well as living in a house. However, it is important to ensure that he gets regular exercise in the form of walks if there is no yard or garden for him to exercise in.
Exercise requirements
Although the toy poodle is not excessively demanding when it comes to exercise, it can benefit him to have a safe and enclosed area such as a yard or garden to play around in. Failing this, regular walks will help to keep the dog active, healthier, and fit.
Diet & nutrition
Feeding twice daily is adequate for the toy poodle, and you should ensure that you provide monitored portions to avoid overfeeding. A high quality kibble as part of the diet will help to promote oral health, and this can be supplemented with a high quality canned food. Make sure that your dog has plenty of fresh drinking water at all times.
Life expectancy
The life expectancy of a fit and healthy toy poodle is around twelve to fifteen years.
Grooming requirements
The curly coat of the toy poodle does require some maintenance, and as part of the grooming process this dog should be clipped every six to eight weeks or so, and bathed on a regular basis. The coat will also benefit from a brushing around twice a week. The ears and eyes should also be checked on a regular basis, as this breed is prone to runny eyes and ear infections.
